Do you actually need an app? Five questions before you build

An app is a bigger commitment than a website. Five questions that tell you whether it's the right next step — or not yet.

Apps

Apps are powerful for repeat use and expensive to build badly. Before planning one, be honest about these five things.

011. Will people use it more than once a month?

Apps earn their place through habit — ordering, booking, tracking, learning. If the action is rare, a fast mobile website may serve better.

022. Does it need the phone's features?

Notifications, camera, location, offline use. If yes, an app makes sense.

033. Who will run it?

Content, orders and support need someone behind them. Plan the admin side as carefully as the app itself.

044. How will people find it?

An app store listing isn't a marketing plan. Budget for getting the first users in.

055. What's the smallest useful version?

Launch with the core flow done well, then add features based on how people actually use it.

Build the app your customers will open on a Tuesday, not the one that looks good in a pitch.
